Choreographers

Midnight Somewhere choreographers touch every aspect of Quebec contemporary dance: from established figures who have influenced the international scene to emerging artists who are starting to captivate Quebec audiences. By bringing together these 8 creators – alternately poetic and euphoric – on the same stage, the show summons the best of Quebec dance, passing the torch to make you feel alive.

Kristen Céré

Kristen has over 20 years of experience in dance, choreography, and teaching in Europe and North America. Over the years, she has created pieces for institutions such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Dresden SemperOper Ballet, Korzo Theater, Ballets Jazz Montréal, NW Dance Project, Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, Festival Quartiers Danses, and many others. In 2006, her piece ELMER won the Audience Award at the 12th Masdanza International Choreography Competition in Spain. In 2018, she won the Pretty Creatives International/NW Dance Project Choreographic Competition.

Anne Plamondon

Anne Plamondon Productions

After over 20 years as a performer on international stages, Anne made her debut as a choreographer in 2012. In collaboration with stage director Marie Brassard, she created her first two solos, Les mêmes yeux que toi (2012) and Mécaniques Nocturnes (2017). In 2018, she founded Anne Plamondon Productions, through which she created works such as Counter Cantor (2018) in collaboration with choreographer Emma Portner, and Fiddle Embrace (2018) for the Ryerson School of Dance.

Ismaël Mouaraki

Destins Croisés

 

Of Franco-Moroccan origin, Ismaël discovered the language of contemporary choreography through his collaboration as a performer with choreographer Xavier Lot during a residency at the Centre culturel André Malraux, spanning over three years. In 2003, he founded the company Destins Croisés, with which he continues his work. His choreographic creations reflect his obsession with embodying the infinite facets of humanity. His repertoire includes notable pieces such as Le sacre de Lila, Phenomena, La question des fleurs, oZe, and Lien(s).

Virginie Brunelle

Compagnie Virginie Brunelle

Building on the success of her first piece Les cuisses à l’écart du cœur (2008 RIDEAU award at the Vue sur la Relève Festival), Virginie founded her eponymous company in 2009. She has created 7 works since its beginning, gaining recognition in Quebec and internationally. She particularly stood out with her piece Foutrement (2009), which won the CAM Audience Award on tour in 2017, and Complexe des genres (2011), which earned the second prize at the Aarthus International Choreography Competition in Denmark.

Lydia Bouchard &
Merryn Kritzinger

La Résistance

Combining Lydia Bouchard and Merryn Kritzinger’s 20 years of experience, La Résistance was founded with the desire to create a playground where multidisciplinary artistic gestures have no barriers or norms. As a result, the collective produces experiences that explore uncharted artistic horizons and challenge both the creators and the audience’s expectations. La Résistance responds to the dual need to honor the essence of performing arts while innovating the experience surrounding them.

Marie Chouinard

Compagnie Marie Chouinard

Originally from Quebec, Marie toured the world as a solo dancer for 12 years before founding her company in 1990. Her works are featured in the repertoires of major international ballet companies. Also a filmmaker, writer, and visual artist, she has been named an Officer of Arts and Letters in France and  received the Bessie Award in New York, among other prizes and honors. In 2011, she created Les Prix de la Danse de Montréal (Montreal Dance Awards). Marie also served as the dance general manager at the Venice Biennale from 2017 to 2020. She is currently preparing for a solo exhibition.

Charles-Alexis Desgagnés

Personne Danse

Charles-Alexis Desgagnés is a multidisciplinary choreographer, creator, dancer, and performer based in Montreal. Self-taught and curious, he explores the realms of dance, improvisation, cinema, and teaching. As a knwon queer artist known for his embodied strength and sensitivity, he develops an artistic vision centered around humanity. His company, Personne Danse, is defined by a perspective that values uniqueness and vulnerability.
